EXCLUSIVE: Kyle Christy gives LSU the boot, commits to Gators

Brownsburg (IN.) kicker Kyle Christy has recently committed to head coach Urban Meyer and the Florida Gators over the phone on Monday night, according to his dad Ken Christy who GSN had a chance to talk to about his son and his big decision.

The 6’2 185lb kicker received an offer from LSU which he was strongly considering, but the lure of Urban Meyer was just too much to ignore. His dad spoke out about how Kyle liked the coaches and facilities over at Florida, and how Florida was a top level team.

Christy was recruited heavily by linebackers and special teams coach D.J. Durkin, knowing he had to find a good replacement kicker because Chas Henry will be gone after this upcoming season. Christy will be giving Sturgis a run for his money in 2011 when they compete for the kicking spot.

Kyle has been punting for just a couple of years now, but really only started getting instruction on punting this spring. His dad said that Kyle has been working out with the local kicking coach and also Tim Williams, the former Ohio State kicker, to learn how to be a much better kicker and punter. During his summer camp tour, he kicked real well. At Iowa State, Kyle hit a 63 yard 4.93 hang time punt that won their competition. Not to mention at LSU, he hit multiple 40+ punts with 4+ second hang times. But other than punting, his field goal range is pretty crazy. He hit a field goal from 55 yards out off the ground. His kickoffs are around 65-70+ on average along with 4+ hang times.

“Kyle’s 6’2″ 185 lbs and still growing. He’s not only a top ranked k/p, he’s an athlete! He beat out some quality kickers to earn his scholarship.” said Ken Christy.

Kyle and his father will not be able to make it to Friday Night Lights for a visit, but he said they hope to go back the week after that.

Other then talking about his stats, I asked his father about his commitment and how solid he was with his choice.

“Solid! There is no school out there that could offer that would change his mind. Coach Meyer asked that question as well, saying Notre Dame or Ohio State…Kyle will be the Gator’s starting punter in 2011 and will give Sturgiss competition at kicking.”

A great additional added to the 2011 recruiting list. I am excited to see what his stats will turn out to be like his senior year after putting all the hard work and getting the training needed to get better to prepare him for college. This kid is going to be something special. Below is a video footage of a mixture of punts and kickoffs from the 2009 season.

Gator Sports Nation will work on getting a interview with Kyle soon. Stay tuned.
