WIth the BCS standings set to be released later today, Florida most likely will see little change in their position. The rankings left Florida at No. 4 in a tie with Oklahoma. But even with three teams still ahead, the Gators need just two of those teams to lose. Urban Meyer and Co. can take care of one of those teams in early December — Alabama.
So how do the Gators reach the BCS National Title game this year?
Well, its simple really.
The Gators control their own destiny. Wins against The Citadel on Saturday, Florida State and then against Alabama in the SEC Title game guarantee Florida a spot at Dolphin Stadium on Jan. 8.
But their opponent?
After Saturday’s expected romping of The Citadel, Gator nation most likely will be playing close attention to the Big XII showdown in Norman.
The game between No. 2 Texas Tech and No. 5 Oklahoma will do a lot to help shakeout the BCS — or it will turn to the headache into a migraine.
The easy scenario is a Red Raider road victory. This virtually would guarantee the Lubbock loonies a spot in the Big XII Title Game. A win there against Missouri would push the Red Raiders into a national title showdown with the Gators
Even if Texas is ranked above Florida after a Red Raider win, a Gator victory over Alabama in the SEC Title Game in Atlanta would vault the Gators over the Longhorns for the same reason why Georgia was “snubbed” last year — because they didn’t win their conference.
The more difficult scenario is an Oklahoma win. But more so for the poll voters and the BCS big wigs. A Sooner win likely would leave a three-way tie atop the Big XII South.
And the tiebreaker?
The final BCS standings.
That headache alone decides who goes to the conference title game and who is left sitting back saying, “hey, we beat that team.”
Regardless, the Gators will find themselves in a BCS game, unless of course they lose back-to-back games against FSU and the Crimson Tide.
An Alabama win over the Gators in the SEC title game most likely would land the Gators in the Sugar Bowl against an at-large team. And who better to play than Urban Meyer’s former squad — Utah.
But that would be the ultimate Gator-ache.
