That’s bad right? Actually no. Last season Tebow had to do everything in Florida’s offense; running and passing for touchdowns at will while single handedly carrying Florida to the Capital One Bowl.
This year he won’t need to do that. If Tebow scores 40 touchdowns this year (combined throwing & passing total) then the Gators will play in a BCS Bowl, and depending on what happens in Jacksonville it might just be the national title game for the second time in three years.
So why the dramatic change between 2007 Tebow and 2008 Tebow?
Well I assure you this, he hasn’t gotten any worse. He’s just got a lot more weapons. Percy Harvin is developing even more of a weapon (depending on how he recovers from his surgery), Chris Rainey has emerged as a star, and Deonte Thompson will be a great second receiver behind Harvin.
Tebow will be just as good as ever but he won’t have to do everything. I really expect Rainey to step it up a lot this year along with Ketashn Moore, Brandon James, and newcomer Emanuel Moody from USC. For a team that seemed to struggle to find a running back last year the Gators are now loaded at the position.
Tebow won’t have to take all the quarterback carries any more either. Hidden behind Tebow is another star quarterback, Cameron Newton, that hasn’t been able to play much because of Tebow’s success. He will receive a lot of snaps this season and will take some of the brunt off of the Heisman winner’s workload.
He won’t win the Heisman again though, but he won’t need to. Florida will be better off if Tebow scores 35-40 touchdowns next season and their offense will be just as explosive.
