Tim Tebow is getting to the Super Bowl a lot quicker than anyone would have thought.
The former Florida quarterback and his mother, Pam, will appear in a 30-second television ad for Focus on the Family during the broadcast of the Super Bowl on Feb. 7. The ad’s theme is “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life.”
“Tim and Pam share our respect for life and our passion for helping families thrive,” said Jim Daly, the president and CEO of Focus on the Family. “They live what we see every day – that the desire for family closeness is written on the hearts of every generation. Focus on the Family is about nurturing that desire and strengthening families by empowering them with the tools they need to live lives rooted in morals and values.”
Focus on the Family is a non-profit Christian organization and its purpose, according to its web site, is to “strengthen, defend and celebrate the institution of the traditional family and to highlight the unique and irreplaceable role that it plays in God’s larger story of redemption.”
The organization did not elaborate on the specific content of the ad, but it is likely to reference the story Pam Tebow has told before of contacting amoebic dysentery while living in the Philippines in the mid 1980s. The bacterial infection sent Pam Tebow into a coma and she was treated with strong medications. She recovered, but doctors told her those medications had damaged the fetus she was carrying and urged her to have an abortion.
Pam Tebow refused and Tim was born on Aug. 14, 1987.
Tim Tebow went on to sign with the University of Florida and became the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy. He led the Gators to the 2008 BCS National Championship and finished his career with the most rushing touchdowns (57) in Southeastern Conference history.
“Now that the ad has been shot, we’re excited to tell people it’s coming, because the Tebows’ story is such an important one for our culture to hear,” Daly said. “You won’t want to miss it.”
The Associated Press recently reported that TNS Media Intelligence said 30-second ads during the Super Bowl broadcast on CBS are selling for $2.5-$2.8 million. Daly the money used to pay for the ad was donated from a handful of benefactors and no money from the organization’s general fund was used.
