The top ranked Crimson Tide is set to take on the No. 7 Florida Gators on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Tonight will be the 36th meeting between both teams and is the 12th trip to Tuscaloosa for the Gators and the first since 2005. The Gators come in at 4-0 (2-0 in SEC play) after last weeks 48-14 victory over Kentucky. Freshman quarterback Trey Burton finished with a total of six touchdowns, breaking former Florida Gator Tim Tebow’s record.
Florida seemed to find their offense last week, but the only thing that concerns me is that it was against Kentucky. They don’t have the best defense. I’m not doubting Florida at all but this is going to be the biggest test they will get all year. Nobody can really say whether or not Florida has solved their offensive problems, but they are definitely on the right track. Junior running back Jeff Demps is still a little banged up from his bruised left foot and it will be a game time decision on whether he will play or not. The Gators offensive line has a few injuries and may be a concern in today’s game.
Florida can definitely keep up with this talented Alabama team tonight, they just need to find their offense early in the game and not wait until the second half to do so. Can Trey Burton have another big game? Or is Alabama prepared for him? Another thing the Gators need to control are their mistakes. They didn’t fumble last week against Kentucky, but they did record 5 total fumbles in the three previous games. John Brantley is also going to have to step up and make all of his throws count.
So looking at Alabama…. The Crimson Tide are looking to bounce back after a comeback win against Arkansas last week. This is the second straight week of a three game stretch where Alabama takes on top 15 teams each week. A couple of advantages they have… One, they are playing at home and two they have seen Florida before. McElroy is going to have to keep his team in line. They cannot afford any turnovers or mistakes like they had last week against the Razorbacks. Mark Ingram played pretty well last week after missing the first couple of games with a knee injury. So the Gators are going to have to do a good job at stopping number 22 up the middle.
Head coach Nick Saban will have his defense prepared to take on several different looks from Meyers offense. Look out for Ingram and Richardson to share some carries in the backfield, aiming to wear down the Gators young defense.
Its going to be a tough game. Everybody knows that. But I have a good feeling about tonight so I am predicting the Gators to come out on top 28-24.
