Florida Gator head coach Urban Meyer spoke out today at a meeting and said that the chest pains that he was dealing with for the past three years had nothing to do with a bad heart.
Meyer has been diagnosed with esophageal spasms, which causes pain in the chest. Urban stated that he suffered from pain just about every morning he woke up for years.
“The biggest thing is I wanted to find out what those darn chest pains were and I did,” Meyer said while talking with the media at the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin on Tuesday. “It’s esophageal spasms and they’ve got me on some medications. I’ve just got to be smarter in the future and I’m going to be. I’m not going to let that happen again. But the biggest thing was all that was related to what the heck were those pains going through my chest. Once you find out what it is, life gets a little better quickly.”
Urban has been taking time to time off from the field since the Orange and Blue game so he could spend some quality time and also have more time to improve his health.
I am sure there are a lot of you wondering or trying to google what exactly esophageal spasms are, but according to the US National Library of Medicine, they are abnormal contractions of the muscles in the esophagus (the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach). The spasms do not move food effectively to the stomach. (Gathered by Antonya English from Gator Report.)
Signs of symptoms are if you are having a hard time swallowing or have any type of pain while trying to swallow, heartburn and pain in the chest or upper part of your abdomen.
Meyer told the media that he has spent more time with his family this spring than in recent memory and that he is feeling “fantastic”. That is exactly what Gator Nation would like to hear.
