Freshman running back Mike Gillislee rushed for two touchdowns that helped the Gators to a 31-17 victory over Tennessee which marks the sixth win in a row under Urban Meyer.
Florida (3-0, 1-0 SEC) still found trouble on offense early in the game, only totaling for 94 yards on offense for the first half. Pouncey had more trouble under center with a few bad snaps, including one that rolled past Brantley on the ground for a 15 yard loss that led to a punt. The Gators also failed to convert on 4th and inches early in the game and were flagged two times for illegal formation. The way the offense is playing and the play calling are still floating around in the air, trying to find the missing pieces.
Tennessee (1-2, 0-1 SEC) took an early 3-0 lead after a 49 yard field goal by Daniel Lincoln. Late in the third quarter, Tennessee had the game tied after Matt Simms connected with Denarius Moore for a 49 yard touchdown pass with 8:59 remaining in the third quarter. Simms finished the game completing 19 of 31 passes and two interceptions.
Florida’s defense looked good all game despite Simms 35 yard touchdown pass to wide open Justin Hunter. Something went wrong with Florida’s secondary that left Hunter wide open. It was a freebie. But on the other hand, Florida leads the Country in interceptions. Jon Bostic picked off Simms pass in the end zone shortly after Janoris Jenkins dropped the ball on the return of a Tennessee punt. Jeremy Brown picked off Simms pass on third down at Tennessee’s 40 that set up Gillislee’s second touchdown of the day that gave the Gators a 24-10 lead just as the third quarter was winding down.
Tennessee cut the score down 24-17 with just 11 minutes left after they got the ball back from a fumble by Jeff Demps which was challenged by head coach Derek Dooley. But the Gators marched right down field with excellent field position after the kickoff went out of pounds which set up Trey Burton’s 2 yard touchdown run that summed the game all up.
