Demps Provides Spark in Gators win over South Florida

Coming off a disappointing victory over the Miami of Ohio Redhawks which resulted in a slide down the rankings, Urban Meyer and his Gators took to the Swamp in search of answers.

The first half of play would not provide any real answers, only a reassertion that the defense is a stingy, turnover-happy unit which can bend at times and the offense is an inexperienced, mistake-prone unit.

At the end of the first half, many in Gator Nation were left scratching their heads in disbelief at what had transpired. Up until the final minute and a half of play, the team looked like a team lost.

But, after an Ahmad Black interception which was followed up by a 23 yard reception by Deonte Thompson to get the Gator’s offense inside the 6, and the ensuing 11 yard touchdown catch by Carl Moore, the Gators looked to be nearing a rhythm.

The rhythm, however, would not join the Gators in the second half, where they started the third quarter just as they had started the first: stagnant.

At this point in the game, Teryl Austin’s defense was starting to wear down in the Florida heat. The unit, which had been carrying the team for the past six quarters, was being gashed.

In comes running back, Jeff Demps. Demps was like lightning in a bottle and Urban Meyer finally popped the cork. Demps’ third quarter 62 yard touchdown run was the spark the Gators needed.

After a USF punt and a 30 yard Janoris Jenkins return, the gator were in good field position to pad the scoring Column. Just four plays later, Mike Gillislee would reward the defense with a four yard touchdown run.

A few plays later, Justin Trattou would join the touchdown party with one of his own off a 35 yard interception return.

The flurry of scores would cap off a 21-point third quarter kicked off by the lightning fast Jeff Demps.

In the fourth quarter, the Gators would continue to find their rhythm with a clock killing touchdown drive which would feature a heavy dose of Florida running backs and would be capped off by a Brantley to Jordan Reed, 2 yard touchdown pass to cap the scoring for the day.

The Gators seemed to have found a rhythm in the third quarter and carried it over into the fourth quarter while killing the clock and preserving the victory.

As for the game’s MVP, I find it to be a toss up between Jeff Demps, who provided the big play spark and Janoris Jenkins, who has been just spectacular for the defense.
