What a day for the Florida Gator scouts. They have landed three of the most highly talented high school athletes in the nation, and all this happened in about a three hour time scale. First, Sharif Floyd announced his decision to come to Florida, then he was followed by Matt Elam, and then it was capped off with the announcement by Ronald Powell to attend Florida. Here is a quick look at these three men.
Sharrif Floyd
He is the #1 ranked Defensive Tackle in the nation, and the #9 overall in the country. He stands at 6’3″, 310 pounds, and will fit nicely in the Gators new 3-4 defense. Many believed (at least early on) that Floyd was leaning towards Ohio State, but once again, Florida topped the Buckeyes, and landed the best Defensive Tackle in the 2010 recruiting class.
Matt Elam
We all heard how Elam was committed to Florida, but then decommited from Florida to Florida State following Urban Meyer’s decision to take a leave of absence. But now, Elam has changed his mind again, and will become a Florida Gator. He is the #1 Safety in the nation, and has great anticipation, which ultimately makes him a ballhawk in the secondary. With Florida most likely Ahmad Black and/or Major Wright to the NFL Draft, Elam has a chance to start right off the bat.
Ronald Powell (pictured)
He ranks as the #2 Defensive End in High School, and is a lean cut outside linemen. He is athletic, quick, and presents good size to a great Florida defense. He reminds me a little bit of Carlos Dunlap, or even Derrick Harvey from a years ago. In the US Army All American Game, Powell made a tremendous touchdown catch as a Tight End, which further displays his atleticism. Could Powell line up as a two-way player for Florida? It is a possibility, but he is a true Defensive End, and adds to an already great recruiting class up front (Dominique Easley, Ronald Powell, Leon Orr).
