No more worries, The Florida Gator offense is back! Well.. From the looks of tonight’s game that is. Trey Burton scored six touchdowns, breaking former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow’s school record in a 48-14 win against the Wildcats (3-1, 0-1 SEC). Burton is only the fourth player in the SEC Conference history to score six times in one game. Burton had 77 total yards (40 rush, 37 receiving). Cadillac Williams was the last player to accomplish this feat in 2003. Burton’s big night helped the Gators diminish their 1st quarter scoring drought.
“Trey Burton was just fantastic,” coach Urban Meyer said. “There’s a lot of great players that have played in this stadium. I think he broke some record. That’s tremendous.”
Florida’s defense continued to be superb once again, but this game they had some extra effort from their offense. Both Jeremy Brown and Jon Bostic picked off Hartline’s pass. The Gators continue to lead the Nation in interceptions.
Winning tonight made Urban Meyer the sixth fastest coach in NCAA history to reach 100 career wins. He owns an overall record of 100-18, while coaching 3 program’s Florida, Utah, and Bowling Green.
Florida (4-0, 2-0 SEC) is now waiting for their long-awaited rematch with the Crimson Tide. Alabama beat the Gators in the SEC championship game last year, snatching the Gators National Championship hopes away.
Tonight’s game showed that the Gators have been paying attention to the media talking about their struggling offense. John Brantley completed 24 of 35 passes for 248 yards, eclipsing the 200-yard mark for the first time this season. Brantley also snapped a streak of 156 passes without an interception. Demps added 57 yards on eight carries before going into the locker room with a undisclosed injury.
