Off the heels of a monster recruiting weekend for the Gators, the freight train that is Urban Meyer’s regime is still charging onward. It has certainly been a roller coaster ride these past few weeks with the drama that is Urban Meyer’s retirement and “unretirement” as well as the Matt Elam recruiting saga.

The Florida Gators currently have 24 verbal commitments from various talent all over the country with four scholarships left to fill. Let’s take a brief look at the current class:

On the defensive side of things at the safety position we have verbals from Matt Elam, Demar Dorsey, Jordan Haden and Jonathan Dowling. The Gators are looking to have the #1 safety class in the nation. Safety rotation will not be a problem for the next few years. This adds to our already stellar safeties in Finely, Hill and Black. Florida is done at the safety position and will not be taking any more in this class.

The Gators are also seem to be finished at the defensive end position. Dominique Easley shocked the recruiting world when he announced for the good guys at the Under Armour All-American Game, he was long thought to be a Penn State lean.  Lynden Trail has offers from numerous top programs around the country and was a nice pick up for the Gators. The real gem to the DE class and probably the entire class is Ronald Powell out of Moreno Valley, California. He is a 5 star talent that is going absolutely dominate in the SEC. Powell’s  choice of schools was down between USC and Florida, however late in the game regardless of the uncertainty of Southern California head coach Pete Carroll, Powell was all Gator. Any defensive end after Powell is going to be a +1 to this class.

The ship has sailed as well at defensive tackle. The Gators have been on Sharrif Floyd for a good while. Floyd is going to be an absolute terror to opposing SEC teams as he demonstrated at the Army All-American Game. His commitment came as a surprise to some, namely the Ohio State faithful.  Coming with him is Leon Orr, a four star recruit out of Gulf High School. It is no secret that games are won in the trenches and the Gators are shaping up to have a very good defensive line.

The cornerback position seems to be wrapped as well. Florida has verbals from Cody Riggs, Jaylen Watkins, Robert Clark, and Josh Shaw. Shaw is another California stud like Powell that will be do exceptionally well during his time at Florida. Shaw will be a nice compliment to lock down corner Janoris Jenkins. I expect him to see the field a bit this fall.

The only real need we have on defense is at the linebacker position. Now that Florida has linebacker coach again it should be easier to pull in more talent. Florida is looking to take two more linebackers in this class. Currently Florida has accepted commits from Neiron Ball and Gideon Ajagbe. The staff is actively recruiting Telvin Smith, Darrin Kitchens, Jordan Hicks, as well as Michael Taylor and Christian Jones. It seems as if Jones has a renewed interest in the Gators and would be  a viable option. Currently the number one prospect on the board at LB is Jordan Hicks. I honestly think it is 50/50 with Hicks between Florida and Texas.

Stay tuned for a look at the class on the offensive side of the ball…
