UF spokesman Sean Cartell states that Demps is going through conditioning to get him ready for the upcoming football season and is attending classes instead.

In early June, Demps brought home the NCAA title for the 100 meters with an amazing time of 9.96. But that time will not count as Demps career best because of the extra 2.5 MPH wind that was behind him, but it didn’t matter anyways because he still came out on top with the fastest time. Along with the 100 meter, he also won the 60 meter title back in March.

During the SEC championships this year, Demps met with his official fastest time 10.06 in the 100, which was tied for fifth for the fastest time by an American male. But his career best is a 10.01, when he was attending South Lake High as only a junior.

The qualifying for the men’s 100 begins today. I bet Jeff is going to miss it but he shows that he has passion for the game of football.

He already missed spring practice for track and now he thinks it is time for him to be settled in for football because the summer conditioning and the work he needs to put out before the season is very important.

Yesterday, April 2^nd, was the kick-off of the annual Pepsi Florida Relays track and field event at the University of Florida’s James G. Pressly Stadium. The Gators won five events and broke a few records, including a world-leading time set in the 100-meter dash by sophomore sprinter Jeff Demps. Senior Julie Northrup also set a record in the steeplechase event.

In the 100-meter dash, Demps ran a 2010 world-leading time of 10.11. A couple years ago while in high school, he recorded a time of 10.01. Previously, Nesta Carter, of Jamaica, had the fastest time in the world this season at 10.15.  Jeremy Hall and Terrell Wilks also competed in the 100-meter dash event. Hall finished in fourth place with a time of 10.30, while Wilks came in 10^th place with a time of 10.41.

Julie Northrup had a personal-best record time of 10:29.22 in the women’s steeplechase. Her time is now the third-fastest time in school history. Her previous personal-record time was 10:31.59, which she had earned at the SEC Outdoor Championships last season.

Sophomore Christian Taylor and senior sprinter Calvin Smith were very successful in the 400-meter dash. Taylor won the event, finishing with a time of 45.55. Smith came in second with a time of 45.62. Also placing in the event were Tony McQuay, who took fifth place in 46.43, and R.J. Anderson who finished sixth in 46.86. That gives the Gators four sprinters that finished among the top six in this race.

Other notes:
- Charlotte Browning, a senior distance runner, captured the women’s 800-meter event with a time of 2:06.42
- Senior long distance jumper Shara Proctor triumphed in the women’s long jump event with a leap of 6.63m
- In the women’s discus, Keely Medeiros finished in second place with a personal-record throw of 51.16m
- Justine Taylor, also a senior distance runner, placed fifth in the men’s 1,500m run
- Sophomore Gray Horn took third place in the men’s long jump
- Ugonna Ndu, a freshman hurdler, clocked a personal-best time of 58.79 in the women’s 400-meter hurdles race

The Princeton Review survey of 122,000 students shows that the new 2009 party school belongs to Penn State which I do not agree with at all. Last visit I made around the Penn State area, I hardly saw any bars or anything around, it looked just like an old boring country placed. Evidently I missed the spots where they have all the fun at. Who knows. But what I do know is that there is no better place to party than <a href=”http://www.gainesvilleflorida.com” title=”Gainesville Florida, Alachua County, Florida Gators”>Gainesville Florida</a>. It’s one of the craziest places ever. This is also Penn States first first place finish in history. Here are the results for the top 20 party schools.

Jeff Demps, yes, the big play-making running back for the Florida Gators, helped the Gator track team win the 4×100-meter relay this weekend at the Florida Relays. The Florida Relays take place annually at James G. Pressly Stadium, which is located on the University of Florida campus. The 4×100 team finished in first place with a surprising time of 39.22 seconds; this time is an excellent NCAA regional-qualifying time. The best performance for the Gators came from the men’s 4×400 relay team. They went up against a group of pro’s, which includes Angelo Taylor, the 2008 Olympic 400-meter hurdle and 4×400 relay champion. When it came to the final leg, freshman Christian Taylor held off Taylor, which caused the crowd to go wild! The team consisted of senior R.J. Anderson, junior Calvin Smith, senior Carlos Phillips, and Taylor.

As for the women’s track team, freshman Genevieve LaCaze ran a regional qualifying time of 4:22.18 seconds and earned third place in the 1,500-meter relay. She also broke the UF freshman record with a winning time of 10:30.79 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Overall the Gators look great on the track. They totally dominated the two-day Florida Relays. They set school records and earned a total of thirty nine NCAA regional-qualifying marks. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Gator track team in the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships in May.
