Graham Stewart becomes 16th commit for Gators

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2011   No Comment

The Florida Gators received their 16th commit from 4-star LB Graham Stewart on Friday which is the second under new head coach Will Muschamp.

Stewart, who is rated the No. 16 inside linebacker, de-committed from Boston College after receiving a letter of intent from Florida through the mail. Coach Muschamp made an in-home appearance with Stewart and that was where his decision was made.

“It was always my dream school, but with the coaching change, that had deterred me a bit,” he told the Sentinel’s Chris Hays on Friday. “But just the overall energy of the place and of course it being Florida, it just seemed to be the best place for me to be to become a better student and a better athlete.”

The New Haven Register reported that Middletown Xavier coach Sean Marinan said that Stewart has always dreamed of playing football at the University of Florida. Stewart is set to play in the Team USA vs. The World all-star game in Austin, Texas this coming Wednesday.

Mike Pouncey will not play in Senior Bowl

Posted by admin on January 26th, 2011   No Comment

Former Florida Gator center Mike Pouncey previously accepted an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl but told the game officials about a week or so ago that he will not be playing.

Pouncey took over the center position from his brother Maurkice Pouncey who left last season to enter the NFL draft and currently playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Maurkice received Pro Bowl honors as a rookie this season and helped the Steelers reach Super Bowl 43 this year. He sprained his ankle during Sunday’s game against the New York Jets and was on crutches but is expected to play in the Super Bowl. He told reporters that he will be just fine.

As for Mike Pouncey, he decided to stay and finish up his senior season and also try to improve his NFL draft stock. Mike struggled with several snaps under center this season, but its not easy earning All-American honors as a guard his junior year and switching to a whole new position the very next season.

Rachel George of the Orlando Sentinel said that Mike was not reached for any words or comments.

Janoris Jenkins arrested on Marijuana charge

Posted by admin on January 25th, 2011   1 Comment

Florida Gator senior CB Janoris Jenkins was arrested early Saturday and was charged with less than 20 grams of Marijuana.

Gathered by Antonya English, the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) reported that Jenkins appeared to be at the Status night club in Gainesville. Jenkins appeared to be in the bathroom at the time he was caught with a small clear bag. He was not taken to the Alachua county jail but Jenkins did receive a citation and will have to show up in court next month.

This is the second arrest of Jenkins. Back in 2009 he was taken in for resisting arrest without violence during a fight outside of a club in Gainesville.

Jenkins announced earlier this month that he will be returning for his final season.

As of right now there is no further statement that has been released by head coach Will Muschamp.

Marcus Roberson & Jacob Fisher take official visits

Posted by admin on January 23rd, 2011   No Comment

National Signing Day is only nine days away and Florida got official visits from a couple of recruits this past weekend according to Rachel George of the Orlando Sentinel. Safety Marcus Roberson (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and OT Jacob Fisher (Traverse City, MI) stayed in Gainesville this weekend and were present at the basketball game against Arkansas on Saturday night along with new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis.

Roberson, who is rated a four-star by Rivals has committed to Texas Tech earlier this week but said there is a 50-50 chance that he will land up there. Auburn and Florida are also top candidates for Roberson, even though his uncle Otis Mounds is a graduate assistant for Texas Tech. Even with Florida in the mix as a top choice, it is more than likely he will stay behind his commitment with the Red Raiders.

As for the three-star offensive tackle Jacob Fisher, he was once committed to Michigan until Rich Rodriguez was fired. Other then Michigan, Fisher has received offers from Florida, Michigan State and Oregon.

Stay tuned for more information on both recruits. Gator Sports Nation will attempt to receive more information from Roberson and Fisher.

Will Muschamp’s First Recruiting Class

Posted by Drew Pritchard on January 17th, 2011   No Comment

The door on the 2011 recruiting class is slowly closing and Will Muschamp is working hard to finish strong. Currently, Muschamp has been able to hold together the class Urban Meyer and staff put together, however, there are still a few openings that remain in a class that will ultimately define it.

Jeff Driskel has enrolled at the University of Florida along with A.C. Leonard, Mike Blakely and a host of others. Driskel has received plenty of attention and rightfully so; he is the National Player of the year. However, before we get too far ahead of ourselves with the Driskel love, we should remember that Johnny Brantley also came to Gainesville with plenty of awards and national attention.

The Gators current class has quite a few openings in it and with the players who are still on the board, Will Muschamp can make or break this class based on the push he makes  going into the next few weeks.

With a lot of talent remaining uncommitted, below is a list of players who will help Muschamp’s first class in Gainesville one of the top classes in the country.

Curtis Grant – Grant is the best linebacker on the board. With great speed and size, he is a prototypical SEC linebacker. The current linebacker situation at Florida is not terrible. Jelani Jenkins and Jon Bostic are going to be terrific; however, the depth at the position is a weakness. There is some talent on the roster; however, it’s likely there will be quite a bit of shuffling in the roster to provide the needed depth. Grant is certain to provide immediate impact at linebacker. Muschamp has suggested Grant is his main concern and is recruiting him as a top priority. With Grant scheduled to visit Gainesville this weekend, GatorNation may know something soon.

Stephone Anthony – Anthony is built much like Grant and could be just as good. As mentioned above, the talent and depth is needed at linebacker. Landing one would be great, but grabbing both Anthony and Grant would immediately provide depth and talent at the linebacker position, and immediately make it a team strength.

Jeoffrey Pagan – Pagan is listed as a 272 pound defensive end, which suggests he could easily bulk up enough to play on the interior line, if needed. He is also quick and could provide a strong rush from the outside if he does stay at end. Pagan took Florida off his list at one point, but with the current staff coming together, he has listed them back in the top five. The idea of playing for Dan Quinn, who has a lot of NFL experience, is intriguing to Pagan, so if Quinn could play a role in his recruitment it could prove vital.

Lamar Dawson – The chances of landing three of these linebackers listed might be slim, but it has not persuaded Florida from staying away from them. Dawson is a fast linebacker and Florida is ultimately competing with Charlie Strong at Louisville for his services. He could still end up in Lexington, since he is only 30 minutes down the road from the University of Kentucky, but Dawson is use to competing for Championships at Boyle County. If he wants to play around other terrific talent, Gainesville may be his best fit.

Marcus Roberson – Roberson has terrific height for a corner and would add some height to a short secondary. Roberson would probably not make an immediate impact, but with Janoris Jenkins coming back, he would not necessarily need to. The Gators currently have a great list of defensive backs on the roster that have shown promise. With the addition of Roberson, the Gators can continue to rotate players in and out and gain the needed experience.

Ray Drew – Drew is probably the least likely on this list to actually become a Gator. He has tremendous size and talent and would be a great asset to the Gators, however, he is leaning towards Auburn, and Georgia is still planning on making a push. Still, if Drew does reconsider the Gators, he could be playing around a very talented front, which would allow him to excel.

Sammy Watkins – Watkins was committed to Clemson, but has recently been swayed towards Gainesville, perhaps by his brother Jaylen. If you watched the second half of the Outback Bowl, you saw his brother Jaylen Watkins play plenty in the secondary. The idea of the two of them playing together could persuade Sammy to Gainesville. Sammy has good size for a receiver and could be a nice target in a pro-style offense.

Muschamp does not have to land all of these players to finish strong, but there is a good chance he and his current staff could land four or five of them. If that happens, do not be surprised if the Gators finish with a top five recruiting class once again.

Coach Meyer leaves enduring legacy at the University of Florida

Posted by admin on January 10th, 2011   1 Comment

For University of Florida Gator football fans the end of a great coaching era is never easy. When former head coach Steve Spurrier sudden resignation from the program in 2001 after a successful decade long run, he left with a string of SEC championships, a national title in two title game appearances, as well as having coached a Heisman Trophy winner.

With the type of accomplishments and records that the old ball coach achieved as both a former player and coach, many Gator fans thought there could never be another head coach capable of eclipsing those heights let alone a player. Yet, Urban Meyer came in as a fresh face hire in 2005 and gave Florida fans six great years with an enduring legacy of his own by winning two national titles (06, 08) in three years and producing a record setting Heisman winner in former Gator quarterback Tim Tebow who is arguably one of college football’s greatest ever players.

The legacy of coach Urban Meyer will not be remembered as one with a disappointing 2010 season and 8-5 record. Meyer will be remembered for much more than that. Meyer captured the hearts of the Gator Nation when he came in and immediately changed the culture of the Florida football team and program. It started with Meyer on day one with recruiting. Meyer knew that Florida was a brand nationally but Florida didn’t know it was a brand nationally. Florida had become so used to recruiting mostly Florida and Southeast region athletes that it overlooked the need of having a national recruiting boost in this internet world. Florida is such an important talent rich state, nevertheless Meyer expanded the reach of the recruiting boundary outside the state and went to such places as California, Maryland, Virginia, Texas, and Connecticut to get the best players in the nation.

Meyer was not afraid of mixing old school tradition with new school trends to make Florida the best place that the top recruits wanted to go to school and play ball in the best conference in America. Meyer created the “Friday Nigh Light’s” program where a who’s who of the nation’s top high school football talent descend on campus in the “Swamp” for competition drills, skills testing, and one on one coaching evaluations. Meyer changed the rules on recruiting figuratively and literary. Coach Meyer was a relentless recruiter and the landscape of recruiting shifted during his tenure. Rival programs began to take notice and shaped their programs after what Meyer started.

What Meyer brought with him to Gainesville after successful head coaching stops at both Bowling Green and Utah, was a good piece of that Midwest value work ethic and family atmosphere from his Ohio roots. Living in a warm weather state like Florida can be a spoiling experience and Meyer wanted to instill no part of that throughout the program and his players. Meyer wanted grinders, he wanted a non stop work attitude and get better by the day commitment of his players, and actually he demanded it. This is why Meyer put such great emphasis on the special teams unit. Something to which is why he took a chance on several lowly recruited players who happened to become some of his most proudest pupils. Players that include such names as Dee Brown, Brandon James, Jamelle Cornelius, Ahmad Black, and a host of others. Special teams is one of the units known for having players who are generally considered the second teamers or walk on players, yet Meyer made it one of the most desired units to be apart of. He made playing special teams special and those players on a Meyer led team received first class treatment. Meyer’s special teams unit often were the first to eat at team meals, get the best seats on the team plane, first to choose a room at the team hotel, etc. Those are the type of amenities that gain respect among many 18 to 22- year olds.

However, the mark of what Meyer has left in his legacy does not solely surround the number of wins or championships alone accomplished, but how he cultivated a culture of what it takes to become a champion. Meyer was hired with the promise of returning the Florida football program to its championship winning ways, and he did that. Coach Meyer insisted his players do community work, insisted they go to study hall, and the players themselves created annual charity challenge which raises monies for local charities. Under Meyer he helped shape the future of Gator football and that’s something every Gator fan and current and former player will never forget. Thank you coach Meyer!

Jenkins makes his return official

Posted by admin on January 10th, 2011   No Comment

Gator Sports Nation was told from close sources yesterday that Florida Gator junior cornerback Janoris Jenkins was going to return for his senior season and now Jenkins himself has made it official.

Jenkins, a three year starter at Florida and a possible first-round draft pick, has recorded eight interceptions, three of those eight picks were from this past year. He was also named to the first-team All-SEC. Jenkins did not play in the 2011 Outback Bowl against Penn State due to a shoulder injury.

One of the big reasons why Jenkins decided to come back was because of the recovery time that would affect him when he goes to prepare for the NFL draft following the surgery on his shoulder. He just wouldn’t of been ready with that shoulder.

Todd McShay of ESPN has Jenkins rated as the No. 2 corner in the NFL draft and the No. 11 overall.

“I spent some time with my family and coach [Will] Muschamp and came to the conclusion it was in my best interest to return to school,” Jenkins said in a statement. “Coach Muschamp was very supportive throughout the whole process, regardless of my decision, but he wanted to make sure I had all of the facts. I’m looking forward to working towards my degree, completing my rehab and getting back on the field with my teammates.”

Head coach Will Muschamp replied to Jenkins’ decision.

“It would have been real easy for Janoris to make an emotional choice and leave early,” Muschamp said. “But with our contacts in the NFL, we were able to assist him in understanding his draft status and he made an educated decision that will be beneficial to him in the long term.”
