Gators Fall Short To No. 14 Tennessee

Posted by admin on January 31st, 2010   1 Comment

Tennessee was trailing by just one point with 25 ticks left in regulation when coach Bruce Pearl called a timeout to draw up one last play for the Vols.

For whoever was watching the game, you would of thought that Tennessee would have Wayne Chism handle the ball and rely on him to win the game. But that’s not how it turned out. Chism was made a decoy and Scotty Hopson took over with the ball and became the hero in Knoxville when he sunk the go ahead basket with just 16.6 seconds left on the clock.

“I’ll get it if we’re maybe down two and need a 3,” Hopson said. “We obviously needed a big shot, and coach had the confidence to put it in my hands so I stepped up and knocked it down.”

It wasn’t an easy shot. Hopson wasn’t as open as planned but after a couple shake and bake moves past Parsons, he faded away just in front of the 3-point line and drilled the jumper which put the Vols on top 61-60.

“I thought he would be more open. He did not get much of a look, but he made a play himself,” Pearl said. “It is a big shot.”

Florida (15-6, 4-3) had an opportunity to answer back and could of won the game but Alex Tyus couldn’t get his shot to fall with only a few seconds left on the clock. Tennessee rebounded the ball with 2 seconds left and it was just too late.

Tennessee (16-4, 4-2) now won sixth straight against their East Division rival and also their fifth straight home win. It also kept them from losing three in a row, which coach Pearl has only done one time ever since he has been coaching at Tennessee. This win for the Vols also snaps the Gators four-game winning streak.

The Gators were lead by Alex Tyus who scored 18 points and grabbed seven boards.

“It felt good. Just kind of trickled out,” Tyus said of his shot. “You just got to realize that wasn’t the reason why we lost the game. We just need to learn how to play a full game.”

Florida pretty much took control the first half because Tennessee just came out slow and sloppy. They didn’t do anything on offense but Tennessee dominated on the boards, outrebounding Florida 27 to 12 after halftime.

Other leading scorers for the Gators were Chandler Parsons with 14 and Erving Walker with 9. Vernon Macklin added 7 while freshman guard Kenny Boynton contributed with just four.

The Gators are back in action on Feb. 4 as they travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama. Tip-off will be at 7:00 pm and the game will be shown on ESPNU.

Tebow Plays in Senior Bowl Despite Illness

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010   No Comment

After a week’s long of practices we finally made it to game day. The atmosphere today was second to none as far as past senior bowl goes. As Tebow was about to take the field everyone in attendance was standing and chanting Tebow Tebow Tebow. As he was waiting for his name to be called I was able to get a close up of him and you could definitely tell he wasn’t feeling that great as he was very pale and not his same passionate self as we are all use to seeing from him.

Now to the game Tebow played good not great as he was 8 of 12 for 50 yards and he added 4 rushes for 4 yards as the South lost 31-13 to the North team. In the 4th quarter as Tim was leading the south on the drive he pulled the ball down and was trying to run for a first down and was stripped of the ball as the North team recovered.

As far as his adjustment to the pro-style offense he looked pretty good as he handled the under center snaps and play action well. I would grade Tim at a B- for the week. Some of the struggles this week can be blamed on him being ill from the time he arrived till even game day. I look forward to seeing what Tim shows at the combine as I think he learned a lot this week from working with the NFL coaches.

Riley Cooper had a slow start as on the opening drive for the South team he had a key drop on a big third down play. But Cooper rallied well and ended the day with 2 catches for 37 yards. As always Riley did a great job of blocking on the perimeter

I would grade Riley at an A- to a B+. At times Riley proved to be the best receiver here and then he would try for the highlight catch and would struggle some. But he definitely showed the big play potential that Florida fans are use to seeing. I think as Cooper moves on in his pre combine workouts that he needs to work on getting off press coverage’s and just making the easy plays instead of trying to make the one hand grabs.

This week has been an awesome week covering Tim and Riley and I look forward to seeing them at the combine. I can honestly say that these two guys were probably the fan favorites even though the game was played in Alabama.

Tebow Still Battling Sickness Before Senior Bowl Game

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2010   1 Comment

Former Florida Gator quarterback Tim Tebow has battled off SEC defenses, criticisms from every NFL scout, and now, the former Gator is battling a sickness before his one chance to shine in front of the scouts.

Tebow has been suffering from strep throat throughout his workouts this week and hasn’t really showed any sign of recovery and its right before the Senior Bowl game.

Jeremy Fowler from the Orlando Sentinel was told that Tebow is still very sick as of Friday afternoon. He looked real pale during the walkthrough on Friday. During the game on Saturday, Tebow will be splitting time with both Oklahoma State’s Zac Robinson and West Virginia’s Jarrett Brown.

Monday is when it started and was probably the worst for Tim. He suffered from a 103.5 degree fever and also dealt with sweating throughout the night.

We all know how tough Tebow is and I don’t think he cares how sick he is, he will still probably fight through it and play but let’s just pray and hope he recovers and is ready to go for Saturday.

2010 Recruiting Class Could Mean Another National Title

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2010   3 Comments

The University of Florida’s 2010 recruiting class, ranked #1 by all the top recruiting sites, could very well mean another national title, or two, in the near future. Is it too early to project what the class will actually do? We know that all these guys won’t pan out. Right? They never do. Right? Well of course not. That’s the point

The 2006 class, ranked #2 by rivals.com, paid immediate dividends. Percy Harvin was a weapon on the day he stepped on campus. Tim Tebow soon found a way to contribute as well. He became the “Wildcat” QB, brought in to make critical short yardage plays. Without them the Gators do not win the 2006 BCS Championship. Then of course this class had several key players who were instrumental in winning the 2008 BCS Championship. That’s a #2 class.

Looking back at that class, Florida signed 27 players. There were four 5* commits, fourteen 4* commits, and five 3* commits. The class accumulated 2901 points on rivals points rating system. I confess I have no idea how they calculate those points, but since I’m going to stick with rivals, I’m comparing apples to apples here. Out of the 27 players, Riley Cooper, Jermaine Cunningham, Dustin Doe, Percy Harvin, Brandon James, Brandon Spikes, and Tim Tebow became major contributors. That’s it. Everybody else was either a role player or a bust. So 7 major contributors out of a class of 27 players in a #2 ranked class, was parlayed into a national title the very first year and another one in year 3. Not to mention another near miss in year 4. Now there were 10 other players who did contribute. But that means there were 10 players who did very little or nothing.

In 2007, UF’s class was ranked #1, with 2959 points. It also had 27 players in it. It had four 5* players, sixteen 4* players, and seven 3* players. Ahmad Black, John Brantley, Carlos Dunlap, Joe Haden, Chas Henry, Aaron Hernandez, the Pouncey twins, Chris Rainey, Deonte Thompson, and Major Wright were the stars of this class. So that’s 11 out of 27.

2008, UF was ranked #3 at 2600 points. (Alabama was ranked #1). four 5* guys, twelve 4*, and four 3* guys in this one. The name players that have contributed so far are, Jeff Demps, Will Hill, Janoris Jenkins, and Caleb Sturgis. Of course it could produce a few more players this year. It’s still too early to close the book on this one. But two years into it and there are five guys out of 22.

2009 was a small class. It had only 16 players. Three 5*, nine 4*, four 3* players in that one. So far, none of them have been a major factor.

That brings us to this year’s class, which could still get larger before National Signing Day. So far it has 26 players committed for a total of 2931 points. The #2 rated class is Texas at 2424 points. So UF is a full 500+ points ahead of everyone so far. Four 5*, seventeen 4*, and four 3* guys in this one. So how many does UF need out of this class to become star players for this class to be a major factor? Ten? Maybe not even that many? The Gators can still add two more to this already staggering class. There are a few players at the top of the class that UF is right at the top of those player’s lists.

So going by what we’ve already seen, how long before the Gators add another crystal football to the trophy case? Those rivals who have been eagerly awaiting the post-Tebow era are in for a rude awakening.

Dunlap pleads guilty to DUI

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2010   No Comment

Former Florida Gator DE Carlos Dunlap showed up in court today where he pled guilty and now has sixth months probation and 50 hours of community service for his DUI charge back on the first of December.

Dunlap was booked on Dec. 1, just four days before the big SEC Championship game against Alabama. Coach Urban Meyer suspended Dunlap for the game which Florida ended up losing 32-13 but he did return for the Sugar Bowl against Cincinatti.

Along with the probation and community service, Dunlap will also have to pay for the court costs and will have to attend DUI school. The Orlando Sentinel  reported that Dunlaps lawyer Huntley Johnson said the case wasn’t indefensible but Dunlap wanted to accept his responsibility and move on.

Dunlap is getting ready for the 2010 NFL draft and is projected to be a first-round pick, even after the incident.

“It was his decision to accept responsibility for his actions,” Johnson said. “I gave him my analysis of the case – I’m not going to say it wasn’t defensible. I respect his decision.”

Dunlap played 13 games this past season and recorded 38 tackles, 10.5 of them for a loss, and 9 sacks.

Thursday’s Senior Bowl Practice Update

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010   No Comment

Today’s practice was a lot of 7 on 7 and special teams mainly. Cooper is really catching the eye’s of scouts.

Riley Cooper did a lot better job of getting of press coverage today. Made some nice plays in the red zone drills. One particular play he absolutely whipped Patrick Robinson(CB from Florida State) as Cooper ran a post corner route and left Robinson in his shadow for a touchdown. I definitely think Riley made the right decision with giving up baseball as he has proven to be a top WR in this draft class.

Tim Tebow had a better day today made some really good decision in 7 on 7 and in the red zone drills. His feet work are getting better day by day as he adjust to taking snaps from under center. Tim looks really good with his play-action passes.

Wednesday’s Senior Bowl Practice Update

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010   No Comment

First of the crowds are getting crazier everyday, the people here to see Tebow is absolutely crazy. Tim and Riley Cooper are so sought after that they are escorted everywhere they go pretty much.

Ok now to the updates. Riley Cooper is probably the second best receiver here this week behind Andre Roberts of the Citadel. Riley continues to show great hands and catches the ball away from his body. He made a nice one hand catch from Tebow down the sideline that really impressed the crowd. Cooper continues to struggle to getting off press coverage and has showed his emotion when getting beat down. But overall Riley is doing really good.

Now to quarterback Tim Tebow he’s feeling a lot better than he was on the first part of the week. Tim is definitely working on his mechanics and making adjustments. He showed great touch on his ball today. He struggled a little bit with his decision making in 7 on 7 skills. But his deep ball accuracy is really well.

Thursday’s practice well be just shorts and helmets but I’ll give everyone an update on practice.

Shawn Brannan of Football Alliance helped with photography and scouting.
