Florida Gator junior Xavier Nixon received the opportunity to join 65 players on the Outland trophy watch list.

The list features only tackles, guards and centers. The list was cut down to only 6 tackles only, and the rest were all offensive lineman. The Outland Trophy winner will be chosen from three finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team. The three finalists for the award will be announced on November 21.

The trophy has been presented ever since 1946 which is the third oldest presentation award in college football history. Patric Young leads USA in rebounding

Posted by admin on July 11th, 2011   No Comment

Patric Young had the chance to show off over in Latvia with the USA Basketball U19 team. USA finished in 5th place in the FIBA World Championships, while beating Poland 78-77 on Sunday to top it all off.

Young dominated on rebounding, which most people in the county don’t find it very shocking. Young has also gained near 10 pounds since the off season. Not to mention that he led the Americans with just under 7 boards per game, and averaged 9.7 points per contest. The USA finished 7-2 and Patric started every game. This kid is going to be a pure beast in the upcoming season. He has my pick as one of the top centers in college basketball next season, without a doubt.

Young, who will be a sophomore this season will have higher expectations than he did last year, especially with Alex Tyus and Vernon Macklin gone. Look for young to dominate down in the paint.

Take a peak at some highlights gathered by the Sentinel, and a special thanks to the FIBA.

Corey Brewer will host camp in Gainesville

Posted by admin on July 5th, 2011   No Comment

Former Florida Gator forward Corey Brewer will be hosting his second consecutive basketball camp in Gainesville. Brewer, who was traded to the Dallas Mavericks earlier in the year before winning the NBA championship, will be hosting his camp at The Rock on August 1- August 3.

“I had a great time with the kids last year. I am so fortunate to have played basketball at the University of Florida,” Brewer said in a release. “I always like going back to give back to the community that has given me so much.”

The camp is for any boy and girl between the ages of 9-17. The camp fee is $150 but included a t-shirt, one meal during each day of the camp, and a picture with the one and only Corey Brewer. It will start at 8am and will end at 4pm each day.

Every penny made from the event will be donated to the Shands Health Care. “Corey Brewer Fight Diabetes Fund” is a charity that Corey came up with to support all diabetes patients. Corey has had several members in his family who were diagnosed with diabetes. He is a given kid.

Demps sits on top of ESPN’s football freak list

Posted by admin on May 18th, 2011   No Comment

ESPN’s Bruce Feldman has recently released his list of the 2011 college football freak list and guess who was out on top?…. Jeff Demps. Not only is Demps a start out on the field, but he is also the NCAA back-to-back indoor track titles in the 60- meter dash and he capped on with the 100-meter outdoor title as well. Can’t you say he IS a freak?

Gathered by Feldman’s story online;

“Demps, who led the Gators in rushing last season with 551 yards despite missing some time due to a foot injury, arrived at Florida weighing 170 pounds, and is expected to play this fall at 188. Gators strength coach Mickey Marotti says the back can squat “an ungodly amount of weight.” And despite the added pounds, Demps has gotten faster. “He was a 10.1 guy, is now a 9.9 guy and probably will be a 9.8 guy,” said Marotti, who adds that Demps has really improved his acceleration.

Demps isn’t actually in the top five Gators when it comes to his first 10 yards. Teammate Chris Rainey’s is tops at UF, with a 1.49 10-yard split (Demps is at 1.57), but it’s Demps’ closing speed that is jaw-dropping. His “Flying 20″ — which the Gators gauge as a player’s electronic time for the final 20 yards of his 40 — is a blistering 1.76 seconds. (Both Rainey and former Gators speedster Percy Harvin measured in the 1.8s.)”

Demps attended but did not participate in this past Orange and Blue debut so he could focus on track.

Jenkins, who was honored with First-Team All SEC was dismissed from the team during last month after being arrested for the third time in the past two years. Not to mention it was his second Marijuana charge during a three month process.

He is also trying to hire an agent to enter the NFL’s supplemental draft, that is if there is one. If it doesn’t happen, Jenkins will have the chance to play at North Alabama and then he may enter next years NFL draft in April.
