No. 8 Gators vs South Florida Preview

The No. 8 Florida Gators (1-0) will host the Bulls from South Florida (1-0) this weekend at 12:21 pm at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

They’re is going to be a lot at stake Saturday for Florida Saturday. As everybody knows, Florida is looking to bounce back off a brutal weekend of play against Miami (OH), which is going to be difficult to just show up and rely on the defense to win you the game again. Just because it worked on the Redhawks doesn’t mean its going to work on South Florida. They are a whole different ball club. Fumbling eight times and finishing up with just over 200 yards of total offense will not get you a win over South Florida. Simple as that.

South Florida is a very scrappy team. You never know when they are going to show up and play. Back in 2007 they upset Auburn. Last year they defeated Florida State and as well as Bill Stewart and the West Virginia Mountaineers in Tampa. I remember going to the game in Tampa and standing on the sidelines looking up at their crazy fans go wild during the pre-game and during the game. They had West Virginia looking scared and South Florida came out with the win. They got a lot of talent down there.

Pouncey, who had some issues snapping the ball last weekend spent Sunday with quarterback John Brantley reviewing their exchanges and then heading to practice. After practice, Brantley said that any issues were all resolved. I guess we will see in just a few hours when tomorrow rolls around.

The Gators also return Frankie Hammond Jr. to the field this weekend after a suspension. The Gators receiving corps may benefit from his return.

Facts:

  • Skip Holtz is coaching his first season with the Bulls, he will get an early test in the Swamp.
  • South Florida is 1-4 against SEC teams, only victory is against Auburn in 2007.
  • The Gators have won 11 in a row at home. Meyer is 36-1 during the first four games of the season, 20-1 at Florida.
  • Florida is 9-0 against in-state opponents under Urban Meyer.

Players to watch:

South Florida: Wide Receiver Dontavia Bogan caught three passes for 86 yards in their 59-14 win against Stony Brook. He also turned a screen play into a 59 yard touchdown in the opening series of the game. Also for receiving, Landi caught 6 passes for 104 yards can become very explosive for the bulls.

Florida: Center Mike Pouncey struggled snapping the ball against Miami (OH) but has responded by changing his grip on the ball and also spending some valuable time with Brantley this past week reviewing and working on their exchanges.

Prediction:

I still don’t feel as comfortable as I should be feeling… but I believe the final score will be Florida- 35 South Florida- 17. Meyer might of worked extra hard this past week on their mistakes and finding kinks in their offense, but I just don’t feel very confident thus far. Not trying to leave off on a negative mark what so ever, that’s just based off from what I have seen last week and plus you never know what South Florida is going to being to the Swamp. They can have a horrible game and lose to one of the worst teams in the Country one week and bounce back the next week upsetting a top 10 team. Working in true freshman and having a new line is difficult but they will find the adjustments and will do just fine. I have the Gators winning by 18.

Addazio: Pouncey “Not an issue”

Posted by Justin Yerina on September 10th, 2010   1 Comment

Last week, all of Gator Nation witnessed the train wreck that was Mike Pouncey. It was far and away the worst performance of his outstanding career.

Mike’s performance has been picked apart all week long, and for good reason. The center / quarterback exchange must be clean in order for an offense to perform consistently; on Saturday, the plays were breaking down on the first step.

Over the past few days, anybody with an opinion has speculated whether or not Pouncey will be the Gator’s center moving forward.

On Thursday, offensive coordinator Steve Addazio squashed any rumors that Pouncey would not be his center. When asked about Pouncey’s status Addazio responded, “He played in the Sugar Bowl, had no issues, had no issues through camp. That surfaced, and when something surfaces, you address it. ”

Addazio considers the offensive line issues a “collective deal.” He continued, “he had a couple of them and he’s addressing that.”

Addazio was obviously agitated about the questions and protective of his center. Regarding a supposed lack of focus which may have caused the poor snaps which plagued the Gator offense, Addazio stated that it’s “not an issue.” Steve would continue, “I’m not the least bit concerned about Mike Pouncey. Not even a little.”

Moving forward, the Gator’s offense is preparing for a clash with USF on Saturday. A game in which the Gators look to bounce back from last week’s disappointing showing.

Look for the gators offense to be much improved, starting with the first man to touch the ball: Mike Pouncey.
