Billy Donovan and his 12 year old son are taking on a scary task which they have always wanted to do.

Billy and his son always watch the shark shows on the discovery channel and have a passion for sharks and they both have discussed about taking a trip to Africa to see some sharks and take a swim with them. All of the talk is about to become true for the two.

Billy, his son, mother, and friends are on their way to Cape Town in South Africa for four days to swim with the sharks. Billy said his wife always wondered why he always talked about swimming with sharks but never did anything. But now they are.

So as of May 30, Billy and his son should start day 1 swimming with the great white sharks. Billy said they will be placed in cages and will be able to see all of the sharks feed which will be pretty amazing. He said he was very excited about the trip because the sharks were showing a lot of activity said a lady who was in charge of the trip.

Billy tried talking to his other son about coming with them but he refused. Donovan and his son must have some real guts to do this because I know I wouldn’t. Donovan’s younger son loves animals and discovery channel. He always tells his dad to turn the t.v on and watch the sharks on discovery channel when the episode comes on. This is a great adventure coach Billy Donovan will be able to have spending time with his son.

Calathes Leaving To Play Overseas

Nick Calathes’s career as a Florida Gator has ended short. Calathes has decided to not return for his junior year at the University Of Florida so he can play overseas in the Euroleague.

Calathes is signing a three year contract in the league and could get around $2 million a year. He still could be drafted into the NBA draft coming up this June.

Nick has two excellent years at Florida, leading the Gators in scoring both seasons and breaking a school record for assists. I personally think Calathes is leaving too early but I’m sure the decision he is making has been well thought threw and is the right one. I wish he could of stayed longer and helped out the team the next couple years, but I respect his decision.

It looks like Erving Walker will need to really step it up and be a leader next year, and hopefully Kenny Boynton, the incoming freshman helps out a lot.

Gators Finish Regular Season

The Gator baseball team finished up the season winning two out of a three game series against Kentucky which is what they were looking forward to but they will have to wait until next year to get another chance at the SEC title.

With the victories from the LSU Tigers and the Rebels, it will keep Florida out another year. Coach Kevin O’Sullivan is still proud of his ball club for what all they accomplished this season.

The Gators came in the game facing Kentucky ranked 11 and with a record of (38-18, 19-11). Florida lit it up in the seventh inning putting up several runs to extend the lead even more.

Florida is now the No. 2 seed in the Eastern division and now they will play in the double-elimination SEC tournament starting this week that takes place in Alabama. I have a feeling they will do very good throughout the tournament. They will face the seventh seed Arkansas at 11am on Wednesday. Do not just look at Arkansas record (32-20, 14-15) because they swept UF when they came to Gainesville so you really cannot under estimate them. Anything can happen between the two teams.

All they need to do is really do what they are capable of doing, and that is winning. As long as their defense is solid and they swing the bats, then they should come out with a win.

Chaney Transfers To Virginia Tech

Former freshman forward Allan Chaney has found a new home to play basketball next year for coach Seth Greenberg and the Virginia Tech Hokies.

The 6 foot 8 freshman left the University Of Florida because of playing time issues and who was also suspended in the last two games for the Gators. He averaged 3 points and roughly 2 rebounds for Florida, and he never knew why he didn’t get to see the floor more. Chaney battled an injury in the mid point of the season.

Chaney had some size to him and Florida could have used him the next few years, but maybe this is a better decision for himself. I know he moved from up north and when I first met him here in Florida, he told me that he was very unconfertable and he didn’t know where anything was around Gainesville. He basically camped out in his dorm room all the time.

Chaney will have a whole new beginning in Virginia. His other options where he could of landed were St. Joes and Temple. His choices were close to where his mother lives at and thats what he wanted most, to be closer. (Pulled from Star-Banner).

I wish the best of luck to Allan throughout his collegiate career, hope he does well at VT and turns out very successful.

Gator Softball Wins SEC Championship

The Gators came into the SEC championship game as the best in the land at number 1 to face a tough NO. 3 Alabama team, but it did not stop them from coming out on top.

Megan Bush had an outstanding at bat with all the fouls balls that were put off, totaling up to an 15 pitch at bat which then led into a grand slam that made the impact in the Gator victory 8-5.

The lady Gators have stretched their winning streak out to 21, coming to an overall record of 55-3. Florida pitcher Stacey Nelson struggled a bit early on in the game but found a way later to shift the Gators to victory.

When Alabama scored their two runs in the top of the first inning, Florida knew they had it coming and they couldn’t lighten up one bit. So after two Gator hits and a walk, Megan Bush sent a ball out of left field for a grand slam to put the Gators on top 5-2. But Nelson struggled in around the 5th inning when she gave up the home run to SEC player of the year Charlotte Morgan who put a ball over the score board that gave Alabama life back. The Gators last run in the bottom of the sixth was an RBI single by Bruder who sent Lauren Heil home.

Alabama did not quit at the end. Alabama led off with a single and then the next couple batters were put on by Nelsons walks which loaded the bases with no outs. The Crimson Tide added two runs to the board but had two outs. Nelson struck out the last batter to end the game and the Gators were now called the 2009 SEC champions.

Stacey Nelson is now (35-3), she gave up three runs and five hits and eight strike outs. Still an excellent performance by the young lady.

The MVP of the SEC tournament was given to Hilberth.

How Would A possible Favre Comeback Impact Harvin?

Posted by admin on May 6th, 2009   No Comment

By now, I’m sure all of you have heard that Brett Favre is mulling yet another return to the NFL. It seems like this has become a yearly event, and frankly, I’m sick of hearing about it. But with all the stories about Favre surfacing, it’s clear that he still commands a lot of interest and respect from the media and fans.

The latest rumors have the 39-year-old quarterback contemplating a comeback with the Minnesota Vikings, a huge rival of Favre’s old team, the Green Bay Packers. I wonder if Favre is just trying to stick it to his old bosses, or if the fire to compete is really there.
Anyway, for Gator fans who like to keep tabs on players who make it to the next level, the question is, would having Favre in a Viking uniform benefit or hurt rookie receiver Percy Harvin?

On the surface, it would seem pretty evident that the veteran quarterback’s presence could only help Harvin along. Minnesota’s quarterback situation is not very rosy right now. The Vikes did pick up Sage Rosenfels, but the nine-year veteran is really nothing more than a journeyman. They also have Gus Frerotte, who, at 37, has to be close to retirement, and Tarvaris Jackson, a young gun who has shown flashes of competent QB play but lacks the consistency at this point to be the man.

Upon further examination, however, I’m not sure how much Favre would help Percy for two main reasons. First, regardless of who is under center, Minnesota is going to be a run-first team. When you have arguably the best running back in the NFL in Adrian Peterson, you’re going to give him the rock early and often. In 30 career games, he has carried the ball 601 times. You can bet that number will continue to rise as Peterson begins to reach his prime.

The other thing to consider is Favre himself. If you followed the Jets down the stretch last year, you know that Favre looked like a shell of his former self. In the final five games of the 2008 season, Favre only completed 56 percent of his passes, had nine interceptions to just two touchdowns and never threw for more than 247 yards in a game. New York went 1-4 in that stretch and missed the playoffs, and a good deal of the blame for the collapse falls squarely on Favre’s shoulders.

It has been reported that he suffered a torn biceps muscle at some point in the season, and that led to the decline. Doctors recommended he get surgery or try and rest it. He went the rest route, but it’s not known how he will come back, if he ultimately decides to come back.
Regardless of who is at quarterback for the Vikings, the team would be well served to get the ball in Harvin’s hands as much as possible. I really think that Minnesota can use him in many of the same ways he was used at UF. With his size (5’11”, 192 pounds) and injury history, it probably wouldn’t be wise to run him up the middle like he was accustomed to doing at Florida. But you could give him the ball on wide receiver sweeps, throw him screens and get him involved in the return game, something the Gators didn’t have to do because of Brandon James.

Looking at Minnesota’s roster, the most accomplished receiver is Bernard Berrian, who is, for the most part, strictly a deep threat. That means Harvin should get the opportunity to step right in and make an impact. While Favre’s presence in Minnesota might make for some drama, I don’t think he will have a huge influence on Percy one way or the other.

Hawks Need More From Horford To Get By Cavs

Posted by admin on May 4th, 2009   No Comment

In one of the weirdest series I can remember watching, the Atlanta Hawks took a 91-78, game 7 win over the Miami Heat Sunday afternoon.

What I mean when I say that the series was strange is that even though the series went to a game 7, none of the games were really close. You would expect that if a series went seven games, the games would be competitive. On the contrary, all the wins came by double-digits, and three of the seven games were won by more than 25 points.

The Hawks were able to beat the Heat and clinch the series despite a pedestrian performance from former Florida big man Al Horford, who missed game 6 with an ankle injury. In game 7, Horford went 3-for-9 from the field for seven points and only pulled down three rebounds.
Atlanta didn’t need much from the second-year player from the Dominican Republic because the team kept Miami in check defensively. Dwayne Wade went off expectedly went off for 31 points. But only two other Heat players were in double figures: rookie Michael Beasley and UF alumnus Udonis Haslem, who had a double-double with 14 points and 13 boards.

While Horford has had the most NBA success of the “04’s,” his numbers paled in comparison to Joakim Noah’s. He did a pretty good job in the first three games of the series (12.7 ppg, 9 rpg), but he only averaged 8.7 points and 6.2 rebounds a game for the series.

Obviously, the young Hawks will have a hard time knocking off LeBron and co., but if they have any chance, Horford will have to step up. He almost averaged a double-double in the regular season, and Atlanta must have similar production from Horford to hang with the Cavs.

Horford will be vitally important on the defensive end because of James’ able to penetrate and get to the basket. If Horford can block some shots, impose his will physically and help stop LeBron’s penetration, Atlanta will have a much better chance at success. But Horford must step his game up.
