Gators Defeat Crimson Tide 83-74

The Gators (20-6, 7-4) bounced back into the groove by snapping the 2 game losing streak with a 83-74 victory against the Alabama Crimson Tide (13-12, 3-8).

Sophomore guard Nick Calathes led Florida once again with 22 points while sophomore forward Alex Tyus led right behind with 16. Freshman guard Erving Walker was the third Gator in double digit scoring on Wednesday with 13 points. And freshman forward Kenny Kadji came off the bench as a spark plug adding 8 points and eight boards. He really played his butt off along with the rest of the Gator squad.

The Crimson Tide were led by Alonzo Gee with 17 points.

The Gators will host the Vanderbilt Commodores for another SEC match up starting at 3pm on Saturday.

Jaguars Release Fred Taylor

Posted by admin on February 18th, 2009   No Comment

By: Brandon

Former Florida Gator running back Fred Taylor was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday. Taylor spent 11 seasons as a back in the NFL and decided to end it with the team he loved.

Coach Del Rio took it the right way by flying all the way to Fort Lauderdale early Monday to have a talk with Taylor and spill out the news to him in a good manor. Taylor was expected to play this year with a salary of $6 million, but it did not come together.

Taylor was one of the best to play the game. And always will be. The Jaguars staff just thought the time was right. Jacksonville has plenty of backs on the roster and all of them are very talented, so it’s not the talent they are losing from Taylor, just the Fred Taylor off the field. He is a great guy.

Fred rushed for 11,271 career yards. He was the ninth overall pick out of Gainesville. He attended his first NFL Pro Bowl in 2007. He has fought injuries later in his career, I think that might have a factor in his retirement to is because he’s getting to the age where he can’t take the hits like he could earlier in his career. Taylor turned 33 last January. He will be missed, not just from the Jaguars but the whole entire league.

Marreese Speights Continues To Show Improvement

Posted by admin on February 15th, 2009   No Comment

By: Brandon

Former Gator Marreese Speights has been exploding in the NBA lately. I remember before he was drafted to the 76ers, there were rumors spreading around forums and other fan blogs that said Speights left too early and how he would stink it up and get thrown around in the NBA. Yeah I thought he left too early as a sophomore and didn’t think he would play at all in the NBA but I guess he proved us who thought that, wrong.

I was shocked when I heard the news on Monday on how well Speights preformed. Marreese saw 24 minutes of playing time, and what he does is go out and gives it all he has to show his coaches and teammates that he can compete and bang with other big men underneath. Speights blew up Monday with 24 points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.

A very interesting fact you might like to hear is that every single game that Speights was on the floor for 20 minutes or more, the 76ers have won. It looks like coach Tony DiLeo is gaining more and more confidence in Speights. Get Speights in there and let him see 30 to 35 minutes a game. He’s averaging around 8 points a contest and about three boards a game. Speights is also leading in the players efficiency for the 2008-2009 rookies. He is doing exactly what he did at UF his freshman year. Coming right of the bench and putting up ridiculous numbers in such little time.

Speights was a huge loss for the Gators this year. Yeah it would of been nice for him to stay and only be a junior but if I was offered $1.5 million I am sure I would take it. Florida is lacking a big man ever since the loss of the guys who contributed in the back to back National champions. And Speights was the only “true” big man his sophomore year, and Florida is struggling on the boards and in the post.

I am very excited to see how Speights contributes the rest of the season. I am sure he will earn more minutes and hopefully a starting spot as he continues to improve.

Marreese is one of the players who are proud to be a Florida Gator. I came across someone on a Gator forum, and one guy attended a game where the 76ers played the Rockets, and he said Speights walked past him and he gave Marreese a “Go Gators”, and Speights just turned around at him and smiled. It makes me feel good to hear that. And even though his years at Florida were short, they still were sweet.

Gators Fall In Athens 88-86

Posted by admin on February 15th, 2009   No Comment

By: Brandon

Despite the triple-double performance by Nick Calathes, the Gators (19-6, 6-4) still could not manage to get passed the (10-15, 1-9) Bulldogs 88-86.

Georgia received their first SEC win today and snapped their 11 game losing streak. This was an upset. There is no way the score should of even been close. Georgia shot over 50 percent from the floor and Florida shot in the 40 range. What really killed Florida was the lack of getting a hand in Terrance Woodbury’s face when he shot behind the arc. Woodbury was once 6 for 6 from beyond the arc and he finished the game 7 for 10.

Georgia out-rebounded Florida by 2, but the thing that hurt the Gators real bad were all the put backs Georgia were scoring off of. They would shoot a three or a long jumper and they would get everything off the rim and put it right back up for an easy two while Florida should of been more physical under the hoop, grabbing them down and push it down the floor like they do best and get an easy two.

Senior Walter Hodge scored a career high 22 points, sinking 6 of 8 from the three point line which also was a career high for him. The other three double digit scorers were sophomore Chandler Parsons who put up 11, sophomore Alex Tyus and freshman guard Erving Walker finished with 10 points each.

Florida will return to Gainesville for the next home game and try to snap the two game losing streak by taking on Alabama on FEB. 18 at 7pm.

Stephanie Brombacher Throws No Hitter In Gator Victory

Posted by admin on February 14th, 2009   No Comment

Florida sophomore Stephanie Brombacher threw 5 innings and recording her first no hitter as a Florida Gator. The Gators defeated Coastal Carolina 8-0 in the 2009 Lipton Softball Invitational.

Brombacher’s incredible pitching is the reason why she is 3-0 on the season so far. Stephanie struck out 9 batters on 80 total pitches in the contest.

The Gators offense was just phenomenal. Kim Waleszonia finished 2 for 3 with 2 RBI along with scoring twice. Kristine Priebe blasted a two run home run out of the park in center field. This was Priebe’s first start and I’m sure this has a big impact on receiving more playing time in the future.

An early rally for the lady Gators led to a 2-0 lead after a sac fly by Francesca Enea. Sophomore Corrie Brooks hit real well. Brooks doubled off the wall and then came in to score after the Priebe home run.

The Gators are back in action today to take on Florida Atlantic in Gainesville starting at 12:30. You may listen to the game on the radio (WRUF).
